Ever notice that there are two sides to the Steal Your Face? Bunch of ingrates. Shame on all for not getting this post up sooner. Can you say something you like about the Dead without using numbers of years or song titles? Lets see... One of the many things I love about the Dead is that they have great tunes with powerful time signatures. Not many bands play a song with an eleven beat(guess which song), a ten beat(playin'), a seven beat(estimated), the old one two Polka beat, and have a lead guitarist who goes off into six/triplet mode when he takes the healm. What do YOU like?

Bill nailed it with the last part " they're the only ones that do what they do" and they still are. How is it there are so many bands that are probably technically more proficient but none of them conjure up magic?

Without going into boring detail, I'll just say that I like enough things about them that I keep coming back to this place to share ideas, opinions, thinly veiled insults and great stories.

In that vein, I guess you could say the thing I like MOST about the GD is the community that has sprung up around thier music. Not too many other places that will accept you simply based on your love of a band, even if you happen to be a pretentious, sheep-loving Scot. Don't matter to us.

Looks like they are getting ready for war.

"At Sunday's ceremony, President Ahmadinejad said Iran should be able to reach a point where it will be a defense umbrella for other nations against what he called "world aggressors."

He added that Iran does not want to attack anywhere, but the country could not sit idly by in the face of tyranny."

If the US/Israel Allies don't attack first, I wonder if Iran would instigate something. I say if Iran wants a fight, let them strike first and be condemned by the world. Better than yet another pre-emptive, internationally unsupported war lead by the USA.

I love little baby ducks..even in cheesy 80's videos
old pick-up trucks..that jump like a Willys in 4-wheel drive
slow-moving trains..driven by a monkey
and rain..looks like, box of, even samba in

I love little country streams..where the wolf has slept
sleep without dreams...before I travel
Sunday school in May.."In spite of all my Sunday learning, towards the bad I kept on turning."
And hay..by the ton for my muddy wheels

I love leaves in the wind..where it don't blow so strange
pictures of my friends..who came to see me last night
birds in the world...that were singing are flown
and squirrels

I love coffee in a cup...for a dime
little fuzzy pups..that shake their head
bourbon in a glass.."Hey raise that glass again my friend"
and grass...shack nailed to a pine wood floor

I love honest open smiles..."You can tell by the way she smiles."
kisses from a child..."Go to sleep you child, dream of never ending always."
tomatoes on the vine...Succulent and sweet
and onions...for the Witchman to chew on

I love winners when they cry..."Wouldn't you laugh, dance and cry
losers when they try..."Line up a long shot, maybe try it two times, maybe more."
music when it's good..."If you get confused listen to the music play."
and life..."Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know."

and I love Grateful Dead too!

with apologies to Tom T.Hall....

Since I like their music so much, I really like it that I can come to this website and listen to shows, and learn so much from what is shared here on the forum. What blows me away about the Grateful Dead is that are so many recordings, and that I can enjoy listening to shows I have not yet experienced.

You took my favorite - unusual time signatures... I'll take another...

Hunter/Garcia tunes are amazing, rich, varied. I make a new discovery all the time, after years of listening. Who else could come up with an opus like Terrapin or a lyric like "Eight-sided whispering hallelujah hatrack" ?

This band has added immeasurable richness to my life.

Also, I really like Jerry singing and playing Comes A Time. http://www.archive.org/details/gd1980-08-19.sbd.miller.88172.sbeok.flac16

Although in the DON'T like post a few individuals made comments about not liking some of the lyrics, to me, Hunter is one of the greatest lyric writers ever. Gotta love those bits of free advice:

"you've got an empty cup only love can fill"
"there's nothing you can hold for very long"
"there are things you can replace and others you cannot / the time has come to weight those things, this space is getting hot"
"lovers come and go, the river roll roll roll"
"the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay em down"
"once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you're lookin at it right"
"gonna make it? i dont know. get down and row, row row."
"if all you got to live for is what you left behind, get yourself a powder charge and seal that silver mine"

all of New Speedway Boogie

here's one I like from Barlow:
"the plowman is broad as the back of the land he is sowing / knows that work of his day is worth more than the planting and growing"

I like the way that on good days, the band members really listen to each other as they improvise. I like how they integrate so many different styles into a single show and into a single song (Playin', DS, Bird Song, OO, etc.). I like the Bob/Jerry back and forth with song selection. I like their attitude towards their fans (at least before the lot scene got out of hand and they didn't do much about it but kept touring, fully aware of the problems). I like the dancing bears, skeletons, and skulls. I generally like the type of person that enjoys their music.

Hmm yeah I like this Other One jam: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1972-08-20.sbd.miller.83733.flac16

Forumites, pure and simple.

I am serious. They get "it", I get "them", they "get me" (well, okay...it was "get rid of me" but they couldn't), and so on.

I would never have returned to the DEAD if it weren't for this place and three people (Arb, Ashes, McG) in the beginning, and two people since (Rob & elb). The gals helped too, but I won't say more cause I'll get in trouble. Not meaning to leave anyone out, it's based on total email traffic, okay? That's all...

But really, that's it for "why" and "what" since 82.

Prior it was simple, but sorry, I are too dumb to not have to mention songs:

A band that can do GRoad, StSt, Box, Bertha, and UJB, five songs I used to play for all newbies in the 70s while I was in full scale conversion mode, simply cannot be described.

Seriously.

New Answer:

Trolls.

Not that I like them, but when they surface (and they always do, be it selling sneakers or yelling obscenities from their mother's basement) I see a solidarity and circling of the wagons to repel the attack. These mouth-breathing neanderthals seem to bring out the best in us, giving us a chance to show that we do indeed have one another's back. Without the Trolls, we could just be another group of socially skewed dorks, just trying to out-babble one another about how much more we know than the other dork.

Plain and Simple....It's the songs.

They performed great songs. They wrote great songs and for the most part the songs that they chose as covers were all great.
There were some exceptions for sure, but not many.

Been really enjoying getting to know her but who knows what would have happened if she wasn't wearing that shirt that day...

I like the swirling boogie that is the cause for Dead Dancing.

I liked being in front of gorgeous new music as it's being created. That's why I try to keep a big rotation of shows - so I don't know them well enough not to be amazed.

I liked standing in front of them like a lightning rod as they created the final explosion of Morning Dew from a whisper.

Great thread!
